At last night's meeting, some members mentioned that there are some excellent internet sources for unusual aquarium plants. I'm very interested in finding out more about that. What are some sources you've had good (or bad) experiences with?

I bought plants from thatfishplace.com once. It was a good experience. I also saw some unusual plants on aquabid.com that I almost went for. Mostly I get all the plants I need from the club auctions or I find something unusual in a LFS visit.

I've had good experiences buying from AquaBotanic, and they have a special low-tech section with appropriate plants if you're new to planted tanks

Also, Aquarium Plants dot com is pretty good, and they have a huge selection, but oftentimes the more unusual stuff is sold out, and you DO have to be careful there as I've seen amphibious and non-aquatics sold there (they'll live for up to a few months, but ultimately don't prosper submerged long term). Knowledge or a shopping list is a must here.

I find the best stuff is from fellow hobbyists, either through club auctions or online forums.

Most Planted Tank Oriented Forums usually have a marketplace area, where you can find trimmings for sale from hobbyists who are serious plant collectors, or trades, and occasionally RAOKs (Random Act Of Kindness) offering either a few trimmings (good to "try out" a plant you're unsure about) or some of the more common plants for just postage reimbursement. Check the reputation of the person offering those first though.

APC - Aquatic Plant Central has a good amount of activity on their For Sale or Trade page:

TPT - The Planted Tank also has a Swap N Shop

Hope this helps!

Thanks. I've been pretty pleased with Aquariumplants dot com, and very pleased with our own auction!
