November club meeting review

This months? meeting was held November 17, 2008 in the New England Aquarium?s Exploration Center. The doors opened promptly at 7:00. I was happy there was no mishap this month as it was pretty cold out. Let?s all hope there is no more confusion through the winter months. It can be fun to meet outside and chat before the meetings but not when it is below freezing. There were thirty eight attendees at the meeting and Ned of Ned?s fish factory was there. Always nice to see a local fish store represented.

Aric started the meeting with a brief discussion about the December meeting. December will once again be our annual pizza party / buck-a-bag auction. Looks like John gets a month off. Rich announced that there will be a mini fish show showcasing Amecca Splendons, The Butterfly Goodeid , aknowleding that the amecca splendon thread on the message board has had 10,000 views.

Alan announced that there were many promotions in the Aquarists guild this month and he awarded certificates announcing promotion to apprentice level to Cornel, Aric, John, Rich, Himself and Dianne. Congratulations to all on attaining this prestigious achievement.

For a presentation this month we watched a NEC video of Luis Navarro setting up a planted tank. The video was informative but unfortunately it was plagued with technical problems as it would freeze up every so often. We will have to work on the hardware issues before we try another video. Due to the pizza party and buck-a-bag event there will be no presentation in December

This months? bowl show topic was ?Cichlids?. There were two entries. John entered cryptoheros nanoleutus ? yellow convict ? and Tony entered a pseudo cichlid ? red-striped cichlid ? which looked amazingly like an anabantid. Votes were cast and tallied. Eric presented the winners with ribbons; John for his yellow convict 1st place Tony for the ?red-stripe? cichlid(?) 2nd place. Next month?s topic for the bowl show will be ?festive? for the Holidays. All members may enter a fish. Bring your own bowl. An air pump, airline and air stones are available for use at the meeting as well as extra water and fish bags if needed.

There were two entries in the photo competition this month. John entered a photo of Zoogeneticus Tequila ? Crescent Goodeid - , Lori entered a photo of pterophyllum scalare - angel fish. Votes were cast and tallied and the winners were; in 2nd place John?s photo of a Crescent Goodeid, in 1st place Lori?s photo of an angel fish. Next months photo competition is still open class so any photos go.

There were a lot of items in the monthly auction with an abundance of plants. I especially like the naja in the biohazard bag. Nice touch. Bidding was lively and there were no $1 bargains this month. Once again I watched someone else outbid me for the blyxa japonica (2 bags). That?s 3 months in a row. Luckily I got a few other items and my planted tank now overflows (not literally).

Skipton Pet Center of Boston donated something as a mystery item for the last month?s raffle but our club president, Aric, who also works at Skiptons apparently forgot it at home. Luckily he remembered this month and we once again had a mystery item. Russ picked the mystery box and opened it to find an Eheim In-tank Filter. Nice. Congratulations Russ. Congratulations to all the other winners.

There was another members only raffle. This month Sera donated a water test kit. Patrick won it. Lucky Patrick. Many of us wanted that one and had to look on with jealous eyes as you claimed your prize. Thank you Sera for your generous donation.

Refreshments were served. Do you remember that giant Kissing Gourami that John got from last month?s auction? This month?s special treat was Fish chowder. Do you really think he put that fish in the chowder? It was really tasty anyway. It accompanied a fruit salad, cheese and cracker platter, chips cheese curls and popcorn, various sodas and for the cold weather ? hot chocolate. Next month we have pizza!
