December club meeting review

This months? meeting was held December 15, 2008 in the New England Aquarium?s Exploration Center. Did everybody else notice that all the club officers (except Rich) were late? This must have been because it was the annual pizza party / buck a bag meeting. Therefore, for the most popular meeting ? 70 attendees ? no one was there to get it started. Eventually everybody did drift in and the meeting got under way.

Aric started the meeting with a brief discussion about the upcoming January meeting. Richard Revis from Black Jungle Terrarium Supply will be doing a presentation titled ?Keeping and Breeding Dendrobatids? (poison dart frogs for us un-enlightened folks).

The December buck a bag auction always brings in loads of items for the auction. This means a ton of work for a few dedicated members to quickly log in all the lots, auctioneering, running, and the worst job ? keeping a record of all the items being auctioned. I want to let all volunteers how much their help is appreciated. Thank you all for your hard work.

There was no presentation due to the anticipated over-sized auction which was just as much fun for everybody. We all kept a sharp eye out for something new or perhaps a bargain or two. There were enough items in the auction to keep it going all night. I wont try to mention everything that was there but I will say that for the fourth month in a row I was out bid for some blyxa japonica. Breaks were taken during the auction for other activities, the bowl show, photo show, the 1st December members fish drawing, and a members only raffle. We were supposed to have a fish show for ameca splendons but apparently only John keeps these fish for he had the only entry. We will have to try this again with perhaps a poll to pick a species that more members keep.

This months? bowl show topic was ?Festive?. There were four entries. After votes were tallied Laura won 3rd place with her ryukin goldfish, Cornell took 2nd place with his blue ram, and (a first in my memory) there was a tie for 1st place between Tony and John who both brought in the same killifish. Eric presented the winners with ribbons. Next month?s topic for the bowl show will be ?White? fish so bring in your best albino (or just white) fish. All members may enter a fish. Bring your own bowl. An air pump, airline and air stones are available for use at the meeting as well as extra water and fish bags if needed.

There were five entries in the photo competition this month. Tony entered a picture of a killifish (no surprise there), Laura entered two pictures of goldfish (please remember just one photo per member), Lori entered a picture of a salt water creature, and Eric entered a picture of an ameca splendon.

1st place was Tony?s photo of a killifish.

Second place was Lori?s photo of a saltwater shrimp (?).

Third place was Laura?s photo of two goldfish.

There was a members drawing for fish. For a members drawing, the club draws a member?s name, and if the member is present, they win a bag of fish. In the past we have done this (via Tony) with killifish usually in July. This month we did a drawing for different types of fish. The winners and their choices were;

Russ Nordgren Blue rams
Michelle Chiang Aphysomenium Scheeli
Patrick Jackson Tropheus
Mike and Cara Montezuma swords
Willem Ackman Mudskippers
John Bindbeutel large Angelfish
Jodi Renzulli Aphysomenium Australe
Tony Pinto 1 gallon tank
Nic Susi Mosquito Fish
Ethan McNaughton Guppies
Phillip Gibbons Angelfish
Lori Schneider Nezahualcoyotl swords
Rich Paulhus Zoogoneticus tequila

Congratulations everybody and good luck with your fish.

There was another members only raffle. This month John donated matryoshka tanks. A 2 ? gallon in a 5 gallon in a 10 gallon tank. Phillip had the winning ticket. Congratulations Phillip. We didn?t have a general raffle so there was no mystery prize this month

Refreshments were served. As one would expect at the pizza party meeting, we had pizza and soda. John had the month off.
