Hi all,

I had my first betta spawn last night! I am so exited that I just had to share the news. If all goes well I will have some lovely mustard gas half moon betta splendens to share at a meeting in three months :D I realize that this is counting my bettas before they hatch, but I can't resist. I attached a picture of the daddy (Big Blue), but I don't have a good picture of mom.

Love the fins! Where'd you get the parents from?

I got the parents from Danai Kengpathomporn (elegantbetta on aquabid) in Thailand. She is really helpful and has beautiful. I found a picture of the mother (see below). She is a great fishy mommy. During spawning she actually picked eggs up off the bottom of the tank and blew them up into the bubble nest. Her aim isn't so hot, but she was trying to help. This morning there are lots of little tails hanging out of the bubble nest and a few little wigglers are falling out and zooming back into the nest. The little "zoomers" are adorable. My husband is so excited that he wants to breed our green mustard gas couple right now. I am trying to explain to him that we should really raise this spawn for a few months before starting another, but he is too excited to listen :D

I also have fish from Bull of Bull's Bettas in Florida. I will spawn his fish later because they are younger.

Best,
Anita

One month and 8 days since spawn and I still have about 50 fry.

Anyone have a suggestion about how to get them to eat some Atison's Betta Starter or Hikari First Bites? They really like their freshly hatched brine shimp. They try the prepared, food then they spit it out. This isn't the "breaking food into smaller pieces" kind of spitting out. Its more like the "BLEECH, this isn't brine shimp!" kind of spitting out. I think that they would rather starve than eat prepared food.

If you have any advice pleast let me know :D I will try to go to the meeting tonight, but I am not sure if I can make it.

I will post a picture of the fry when I figure out how to get my camera to focus on them.

Best,
Anita

You could try one of the smaller nematodes, like walterworms, butterworms, or microworms. Rich Rego posted them for sale here.

If you want to transition them to prepared foods, you might want to take some brine shrimp flakes and grind them up very fine. I don't know whether that would work, but it might be worth a try.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will try the ground brine shrimp flakes and let you all know how it goes :)
