September 2024 Monthly Meeting
Our next meeting will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024. BAS will be having Brian Martineau as a speaker. His talk will be about his work with Parosphromenus.
Indonesia's peat swamp forests, the largest in the world, are under threat due to development and conversion into industrial forests and palm oil plantations. This destruction endangers many species, including the labyrinth fish genus Parosphromenus. While hobbyist-conservationists in Europe and Asia have advanced efforts to propagate these fish in captivity, the United States, so far, lags behind. I will discuss the care and breeding of this genus, along with the international hobbyist-led initiative to preserve their genetic diversity, and my efforts to expand this in the US. These efforts are crucial to the survival of this genus as their natural habitats rapidly disappear from Southeast Asia's lowland rainforests.
After the talk, we will have our usual monthly auction, 50/50 split.
Please feel free to bring in refreshments to share.
If you are driving, street meters are free after 8PM. Also, there is plenty of street parking especially along India Street (set your GPS for 35 India Street) you will find empty meters. Paid parking is available nearby in the Boston Harbor Garage. If you are taking the MBTA, take the Blue line to Aquarium.
