Is there an easy well to tell a female from a male and if so, what do they need to produce offspring?

You need to think about whether you want to actually breed goldfish. It's not uncommon to have 500-1000 fry form a goldie spawn. But, if you decide that goldfish breeding is for you, then here's a good link:

You can't tell males from females until they reach sexual maturity. Males in spawning condition will then get what look like pimples on their gill covers and on their pectoral fins. The pimples are hard and rough.
