I recently acquired a breeding pair of Red Empress. After two days homed in their new tank my female is holding. I'm new to breeding Africans, I have kept them for years now, but never really committed to trying to spawn them. I tossed the male into back into my show tank so the female is alone now in a 38. What do you guys recommend? Should I strip the fry from her after a period of time or should I just let her be in the tank?

Thanks,
Joel

If it were me, and she is in there alone, I would let her spit naturally. Just make sure they'll have plenty of places to hide. I have a 38 with blue dolphins. With the first spawning, only one survived, but last week she spit out 20! 38 seems a little small for a pair of empresses, though. My male is around 8 inches. Magnificent fish. Good luck!

I usually pull them if the female looks really thin after 3 weeks. I use a bic pen cap and make a sharp point at the end with a utility knife and it works well. If you strip them it is a good idea to put them into a fry container in the tank so the fry get plenty of food.
good luck
