July Meeting - Finding and Keeping Rare and Endangered Species in the Hobby

The speaker at our July 20th meeting will be Craig Storms. His presentation explores the challenges and solutions for successfully keeping rare and endangered species in the hobby. Hard-to-find species often follow a ‘boom and bust’ cycle where they are readily available for a while but then disappear over time. Species at-risk are of special interest because their supply in the wild may be compromised - making it all the more valuable to establish them in the hobby through local club fish breeding and distribution efforts.

Networking across clubs using AquaristSpecies.net and leveraging the new CaresSpecies.org site will be discussed and demo’d with examples including the Blue Gularis (Fundulopanchax sjoestedti), the Brunei Beauty (Betta macrostoma), and the Ornate Rainbowfish (Rhadinocentrus ornatus). We’ll also discuss and brainstorm ways that local clubs can promote solutions to help educate fellow aquarists, and reward and recognize successful efforts to maintain at-risk species long-term.
